Défi Hors Piste: The online skate contest you don't want to miss this summer

Four Categories, a $ 7,000 prize purse and a one-of-a-kind competition that rewards your creativity just as much as your skateboarding skills. The Adrénaline Urbaine gang is coming back in force this year with the second online skateboarding edition of the Défi Hors-Piste.

Formerly an in-person competition, the Défi Hors-Piste has adapted to the specific circumstances of 2020 and has emerged with one of the most unique and creative online event there is. And we are happy to announce that we are the official sponsor for this year’s Women Open category!

Not only did the Défi Hors-Piste allowed skaters to participate in a contest during the pandemic, but it also gave skateboarders the chance to explore all facets of their art by combining video production, funky concepts, special challenges and skate skills of course.

WHAT IS THE DÉFI HORS-PISTE

The 2021 Défi Hors-Piste is an online competition that aims to have all participants submit a video of their skateboarding, but in the most "Off-road" way possible. The video can be filmed on a smart phone as well as on a regular camera.

«Off road» can be in the choice of your spots, in the challenges you do or simply in the concept of your video. The more unique, the better. All this in order to score points and obtain the highest rating possible out of 100.

Videos for the Men, Women, Amateurs and Beginners categories will be rated by a panel of judges made of experienced skaters such as JS Lapierre, long time member of the Empire family. Points will be awarded to the various participants according to 3 criterias: challenges, creativity and skating skills/efforts. As the name suggests, the more "off-road" your project is, the easier it will be to accumulate points.

REGISTER FAST, registration is open until July 8! Videos shot this summer must be submitted by August 8, 2021! For all the information about the regulations, important dates and DHP 2021 in general, click on the link below.

Empire is proud to be the official sponsor of the DHP 2021 Women Open category. To get more insight about this one of a kind contest, we contacted Vanessa Cléroux, a skater and videographer who participated in the Défi Hors-Piste 2020 and who not only submitted a fire video, but also won the best videographer's prize for the Men’s category with Jesse Jean-Bart’s video.

Check out her video from last year's DHP and keep scrolling to hear what she has to say about her Défi Hors-Piste experience.

Hi Vanessa! First, describe the Défi Hors-Piste in your own words. The Défi Hors-Piste is an online skateboarding competition in which a skater teams up with a videographer to create a video project that features an «off the beaten path»,creative type of skating, all in the space of one summer.

You participated in DHP 2021 as both a skater and a director. What aspect of the competition did you like the most? I really liked both sides of the contest. When it comes to skateboarding, I really liked pushing myself to do different tricks, tricks that I had never done before. I hurt my ankle midway so the skateboarding part was more difficult, but the creative aspect made up for it. In terms of production, it was really good to have complete freedom on everything related to the editing, the music and the concept. We had to introduce certain challenges and find a way to remain original or «off road», but the whole creation side was up to us and that’s what made this project so special.

You also did the music for your video and Jesse Jean Bart’s video, the winner of the 2020 Men's category? Indeed, I composed and played the music for both parts. This is another reason why this competition is so interesting. The Défi Hors-Piste is a good way to put your other talents to good use.

What is your biggest highlight from DHP 2020? After spending weeks skating, filming and creating what would become a complete video project, it was really satisfying to see the finished product. The mix of music, editing and clips and everything we worked hard for. It was probably my highlight from last year's edition. A lot of great memories.

What Woman would you like to see compete the most in this year's DHP? One Montreal skater who I really like right now and that I would like to see in DHP 2021 is Samantha Secours (@hotmail.ca).
