Description

Originally engineered for climbers tackling everything from rock to alpine ice, the Arc'teryx Proton Hoody has earned its place as a benchmark breathable insulator for any high-output mountain activity. It sits in that critical zone between a baselayer and a shell, managing heat and moisture during sustained effort so you stay comfortable instead of clammy.

The Proton Hoody is built around 80 gsm Coreloft™ Compact insulation — made from 100% recycled materials — paired with a Fortius™ Air 20 face fabric (42% recycled nylon) that balances air permeability, weather resistance, and stretch in a light package. A 20-denier Toray plain-weave liner promotes internal airflow, knit cuffs seal out drafts at the wrists, dual hem adjusters lock in fit, and a 60 gsm PrimaLoft®-insulated hood is cut to fit over a helmet. The FC0 DWR finish repels moisture without intentionally added PFAS, and No Slip Zip™ pullers keep pockets closed when you're moving hard.

Who it's for

The Proton Hoody is the right choice for skiers, ski tourers, climbers, and alpinists who need warmth that doesn't suffocate during sustained aerobic effort. If you tend to run hot on the skin track or on a long multipitch and hate stopping to manage layers, this jacket is designed around that exact problem. It also layers cleanly under a hardshell when conditions deteriorate.

FAQ

  • Can I wear the Proton Hoody as a standalone jacket? Yes — its weather-resistant face fabric and insulated hood make it viable as a light outer layer in cool, dry conditions, though it is optimized as a mid-layer under a shell in harsher weather.
  • Does the insulation still perform when wet? Coreloft™ Compact insulation is designed to retain warmth even when damp, and the FC0 DWR treatment helps the face fabric shed light moisture before it can saturate the insulation.
